SHOOT LIKE A GIRL
Founded in 2009 by Karen Butler, Shoot Like A Girl has grown into a movement dedicated to providing women with the confidence, education, and skills to safely and responsibly engage in shooting sports. What began with a mission to introduce women to archery out of a 6’ X 10’ booth has expanded from a grass-roots initiative to a truly professional experience that now includes shooting, hunting, and the proper handling, operation and storage of firearms. The small booth gave way years ago to a full-sized semi-tractor trailer and stops at Cabela’s locations across the US to bring a hands-on opportunity to try out something new (and sometimes intimidating) to people who would likely never have had the opportunity to experience the excitement of firing their first shots (or arrows) in a comfortable environment. Today, Karen and her team travel tens of thousands of miles each year to attract thousands of women, children, and men to their events at Cabela’s, Bass Pro, and in other locations.

Karen’s inspiration for Shoot Like A Girl came from her own experiences on the range. She saw that the shooting sports community had a clear gender gap, and she came up with the idea of creating an inclusive space for women to learn about firearms, build their confidence, and break free from the stereotypes surrounding women and guns.

The name Shoot Like A Girl is a deliberate challenge to the derogatory use of the phrase “shoot like a girl,” which has often been used to imply that women are not capable of being skilled marksmen. By embracing and reclaiming the phrase, Shoot Like A Girl changes the narrative, demonstrating that women are just as capable at being skilled, confident, and competitive as men in the world of shooting sports.

The organization’s core mission is to empower women, so the emphasis is not on competition, but rather on personal growth and inspiration. In addition to providing shooting instruction, Shoot Like A Girl fosters a strong sense of community. Participants not only gain valuable skills but also connect with the SLG team, who offer support and encouragement, breaking down the traditional barriers to entry for women in the shooting sports. On top of all that, Karen and her team raise tens of thousands in donations for non-profit organizations each year.
A key innovation of Shoot Like A Girl is its mobile shooting range, which was launched in 2013 and stays on the road traveling across the country much of the year. This fully equipped semi features a virtual range and archery setup that makes it easier for women to have a comfortable experience with hands-on instruction provided by Karen and her team. It also lets new shooters see what our industry has to offer and to compare and contrast different firearms with a team of experts, all while learning about using firearms responsibly and safety.
