EPISODE III: THE BALANCE OF THE BUILD

In Episode 3, Jim Hodge covers the process of assembling the upper receiver, focusing on the gas system, the handguard, and the bolt carrier group (BCG). Key to all these components working in perfect unison is another of Jim’s build philosophies: “The more bearing surface you have in a lockup – from your handguard to your upper receiver – the more rigid it’s going to be.”

Jim also explains how he prefers to have industry subject matter experts provide some of his parts, such as the BCG. In doing so, he applies this same lockup philosophy to his business partnerships, ensuring that the things his partners can already do well should be done by those same partners. This allows him to focus on the components he has the most expertise in and ensures that he only has the best parts contributing to his premium upper receivers.
