Last year, skilled CrossFit athlete Jacob Heppner turned his attention to a new form of competition: The Tactical Games. The already formidable physical athlete would have to grow from being just an avid shooter to something a lot more in the firearms space to stand a chance in a place where guns and fitness are rolled into one grueling contest.

The already formidable physical athlete would have to grow from being just an avid shooter to something a lot more in the firearms space to stand a chance in a place where guns and fitness are rolled into one grueling contest.
Combining skill-based shooting scenarios with extreme exertion, The Tactical Games has quickly become the place to truly test one’s mind, body and marksmanship. We met up with Jacob Heppner at ETTS, a range located outside of Waxachachie Texas, on a sweltering summer weekend where air temps were pushing 110 degrees. Competing in the Men’s Elite class for just the second time, Jacob utilized the two-day event to get more experience in putting rounds downrange and more stages under his belt in preparation for the final games ahead. Jared and the crew at The Tactical Games did not disappoint, with a brutal event layout focused on rewarding those who could control their heart rate after moving some serious weight in the serious heat and still put shots on target.

Focused On The Target

Sled Pull
Jacob excelled in the physical portion of the matches, pulling away decisively on the endurance events, only to be reeled back in when it came time to put shots on target. With only a couple months of dedicated firearms training behind him, Jacob was beginning to clearly see that performing well in the shooting portion of the competition was a result of putting in the time, discipline, and many thousands of rounds downrange. The event was also an opportunity to meet some of the heavy hitters in his class and exchange knowledge, techniques and form across both the shooting and physical disciplines.
After the dust had settled, the sweat had dried, and the brass and targets were cleaned up, Jacob ended up earning second place over all. Next stop: the National Championship.
